We shall feature composers from Moravia and surrounding areas starting with a Hungarian Circle Dance and the theme of the "Largo" from Dvorak's New Worlds Symphony, both arranged by Mary Cohen for easy access for all string players including beginners on open strings.
This is followed by selections from Leos Janacek "Idyll for Strings".

As we are featuring a young trumpet player, High School Senior Sam Keating on Solo Trumpet in the first movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in Eb, we have invited our friends on wind instruments for the Haydn Concert and the closing piece: Dvorak's 8th Symphony in an arrangement
by Mark Goddard.

Spring 2024: "A Stroll through the Evolution of Occidental Music
The concert will start with a nursery rhyme, the earliest form of musical expression, and will be followed by a folk tune from Scotland. These two tunes allow all players to partake.

From there the concert will move to a glorious Renaissance piece, a Gregorian Chant ("Terribilis est Locus Iste" and "Nuper Rosarum Flores") in an arrangement for string orchestra by Alex Malin.
A high light of the Baroque era is the JS Bach Violin Concerto for 2 solo violins, string orchestra and harpsichord in three movements. This will be performed by 6 soloists (2 per movement), 5 professionals and a high school student looking at a career in music, and will be supported by John Curtis, a much sought after harpsichord, organ and piano player. This elaborate concert is underwritten by the Essex County Arts Council.

Joseph Haydn is a Classical composer who has written a proliferative number of symphonies. We picked #30 for our performance, the “Allelujah Symphony”.  For this we have invited our wind player friends and you will see 10 violins, 4 violas, 6 celli and a Great Bass on stage together with a quartet of recorder players, 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, a trumpet and a French horn for a great sound, quite representative of Classical era orchestras.
The tie to the modern times is an arrangement of the “Song of Peace” from Finlandia, a great Romantic symphonic work by Jean Sibelius.
And then we'll move on to Lindsey Stirling! Elizabeth Izzo, Iron Woman, EMT, Emergency Medicine PA and music woman will solo on “The Song of the Caged Bird” accompanied by a a quiet string orchestra “Wall of Sound”
We promise two great performances of this unique concert:

The concerts have been made possible, in part, by several community grants for which we thank the following organizations: -Statewide Community Regrant (SCR) for the Adirondack (ADK) Quad-County region of Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties, administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts Center,

The Henry Mancini Institute String Quartet visits the north country for a residency hosted by the Community String Orchestra of the Adirondacks.
May 16-23 the quartet will perform, teach, and begin their recovery from a busy school year. The HMI String Quartet is comprised of graduate fellows from the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music including cellist and former Adirondack resident Esther Rogers Baker. They will bring music to schools in Keene, Peru, Morrisonville, and Tupper Lake, visit the Community String Orchestra of the Adirondacks at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, give private lessons, and give two concerts in Saranac Lake.

You can see them perform at Will Rogers on May 17 at 7pm and at Lake Flower Landing at 7pm on May 19. With a unique combination of musical backgrounds, including classical, pop, Celtic, and Brazilian, the HMI quartet performs a broad range of styles, offering a fresh take on the string quartet tradition. They also have a passion for works by living (and underrepresented) composers. Notable recent engagements include Steve Reich’s Different Trains in collaboration with Seth Parker Woods, a special invitation to perform an original Celtic arrangement at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY, and masterclasses with Rachel Barton Pine and the Miro and JACK Quartets. Their coaches in Miami include Jeffrey Zeigler (formerly Kronos Quartet) and Scott Flavin.

Music on May 17 will include arrangements of traditional fiddle tunes for string quartet, Blueprint by Caroline Shaw, and Knock by Joan Jeanrenaud. Music on May 19 will feature String Quartet No.5 by Daniel Bernard Roumain honoring Rosa Parks, Alleged Dances by John Adams, and a premier work by Frost School of Music composer David Vess.

Both concerts are free with donations gratefully accepted to benefit the Community String Orchestra of the Adirondacks. The Community String Orchestra of the Adirondacks is a non-profit organization for musicians and by musicians of all ages and abilities. Their work strives to bring string musicians together and to bring music to the local communities of the northern Adirondack region.
